A funeral home that serviced Chicago Cubs legend Ernie Banks filed a $35,000 claim against his estate due to unpaid funeral bills. Fortunately, the Chicago Cubs and its owner jumped in to promptly settle the issue, a report by The Root stated on March 7.
In an interview, Donnellan Funeral Home owner Joseph Donnellan said the dues were settled by the team and the Ricketts family, the team’s owner. Ernie Banks’ estate is currently embroiled in an intense legal battle between Banks’ caregiver Regina Rice and his widow Elizabeth Banks. In a recent move, Rice’s attorney said Banks’ estate was assessed to be just $16,000. A judge, meanwhile, ordered Rice to present a detailed accounting of the estate. Ernie Banks left his estate to Rice after changing his will months before passing away at 83.
