Shutting Down a Scandal: Protecting a Son’s Legacy From Influencer’s Social Media Attacks

What Happened

The death of a child is perhaps the most difficult life event a parent could be compelled to endure. Imagine how much that difficulty would be compounded if the facts surrounding the child’s tragic loss and personal life were plastered across various social media platforms for strangers to consume.

Sadly, this was the situation in which our client recently found herself.

Our client’s son had been dedicated to his parents, siblings and beloved dog. He was an athlete, an avid musician and, by all accounts, extraordinarily hardworking and driven. In fact, he was well on his way to earning a nest egg large enough to retire early so he could enjoy time with his family and experience the world while still young. His life, however, was cut tragically short.

Immediately after the son’s passing, his partner at the time of his death — a pseudo social media influencer — began making demands for money, claiming that the son had made binding promises to support her and that she was entitled to the entirety of his estate. She eventually filed actions in both the probate and civil courts against the son’s estate and our client personally, seeking the entire value of the estate as damages.

Worse still, the death of the son became the subject of social media fodder, which led to online attacks surrounding the personal integrity of our client, her family members and the son. Unfortunately, this became a regular occurrence due to the partner’s airing of the private grievance on social media.

How Keystone Was Able to Help

Our client requested for Keystone to put a stop to the dragging of her name and the names of her immediate family members through the proverbial “mud.” In response, our attorneys aggressively advocated for the client and her family in the pending lawsuits. These lawsuits promised not only to tarnish the son’s memory, but also bring to light facts about the son’s partner that deserved to stay private.

Ultimately, Keystone’s attorneys were successful in securing a settlement that not only protected a vast majority of the son’s hard-earned estate but led to the taking down of almost all social media content related to our client, her family and her son.

Additionally, the settlement ensured that any additional social media posts related to specific negotiated subject matters would result in monetary liability of the son’s partner.

As a result of the successful settlement, our client and her family are finally able to put this matter behind them, enabling them to mourn their loss without protracted litigation interfering in that much-needed process.
